DICK AND JANE

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Dick and Jane Millager are wood workers with many years of experience. Their western designs are influenced from time spent in the southwestern states of Arizona, California, Texas and New Mexico. Dick’s love for wood and appreciation of the living tree can be seen by his ability to apply the ancient art of chip carving. Jane's Cherokee heritage can be seen in her intricate scroll sawed designs. Her popular “Ornaments from around the World” series is evidence of her love for celebrating our global diversity. Their uniquely hand crafted items have been sold to collectors throughout the world.

ABOUT THE WORK

Dick and Jane's work is accomplished by their hands alone, no laser cutting, no CNC machining and no employees or contractors.

The laminated and segmented objects contain precision cut pieces of hardwoods. Any exotics used are purchased from established legal sources. These many pieces of wood are sanded, glued and then sanded again and glued, until a rough vessel shape appears. Within this shape will hide a beautiful wooden object that will only reveal itself as they apply their skill to the whirling object on the lathe.

Dick’s chip carving that adorns the bowls, boxes, clocks and plates is done with one hand held knife. Although carved in the traditional style, the precision of the patterns is developed on the computer giving them an exactness that the ancient craftsmen could only dream about.

Jane's desire to honor the natural world has led her to design a line of southwestern inspired accessories. She has developed a unique process of working with small highly detailed pieces of hardwood veneers.

When satisfied with the object, they apply a minimum of three coats of finish modified with a urethane to bring out the wood's natural beauty and to build durability. The finish is non toxic and the process by which it is applied took over five years of experimenting to develop. Each coat is worked to impart a warm, natural, hand-rubbed look and feel. The goal is to provide a quality product of exceptional value that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

CARE OF YOUR NEW TREASURE

All of our products have a urethane finish that will last for years. They can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and then dried immediately. If you have used an item to serve food, such as salad, bread, chips, or nuts and you feel it needs washing, simply swish it out with warm soapy water, rinse and again, dry it immediately. The urethane finish seals in the natural oil of the wood so it will not dry out. It doesn’t have to be oiled like they did in the old days. Moisture and temperature changes should be avoided as they cause the cells of the wood to expand and contract. Some simple rules to follow: Do not serve either hot or cold liquids. Do not submerge in water for extended periods of time and of course - no dishwasher or microwave.
